Company Overview

What is AIA New Zealand and who's behind it?

AIA New Zealand is the country's largest life insurer by premiums written, providing life, health, trauma, income protection and total permanent disablement cover to more than 800,000 Kiwi policyholders. AIA NZ is a wholly owned subsidiary of AIA Group Limited, headquartered in Hong Kong - one of the largest life insurance groups in the world, operating across 18 markets in Asia-Pacific.

AIA has been operating in New Zealand since 1981, originally as part of American Life Insurance Company (ALICO). In 2018, AIA acquired Sovereign Assurance Company Limited, one of NZ's largest life and health insurers at the time. The combined business has traded as AIA New Zealand Limited since 5 August 2019. AIA NZ is headquartered at AIA House, 74 Taharoto Road, Takapuna, Auckland.

AIA holds an AA (Very Strong) Insurer Financial Strength rating from Fitch Ratings (affirmed December 2025, Stable Outlook), with a solvency ratio of 115%. In 2024, AIA paid $829.6 million in total claims - a $95 million increase on 2023 - with a claims approval rate of 92-93%.

Unlike general insurers that cover cars and homes, AIA focuses exclusively on life and health insurance products. AIA is registered with the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) and is a member of the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) dispute resolution scheme.

AIA sells policies through a network of financial advisers across New Zealand. Customers can also explore products and request callbacks through the AIA website or manage existing policies via the MyAIA online portal.

Note on limited online reviews: AIA New Zealand has relatively few consumer reviews on public platforms compared to general insurers. This is common for life and health insurers, where policies are typically sold through financial advisers rather than direct online channels. The Google rating of 3.6/5 is the most representative public data point available.

AIA Vitality has genuinely motivated me to exercise more. The Airpoints rewards and premium discounts are a nice bonus on top of staying healthy.

Google Review, 2024 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Premiums have increased every year and are now significantly more than what competitors quoted me. The trauma cover pricing felt especially steep.

Google Review, 2024 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†โ˜†

Had a health insurance claim for day surgery and everything was handled smoothly. No issues with the pre-approval process at all.

Google Review, 2025 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Getting clear information about what was and wasn't covered under my policy was frustrating. Took several phone calls to get a straight answer on exclusions.

The enhancement passback is a great feature - my policy has been upgraded twice at no extra cost. You don't see that from many insurers.

Our Verdict

Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of AIA New Zealand

7.3
out of 10
Good

AIA's greatest strengths are its financial stability and comprehensive life insurance range.

As NZ's largest life insurer with an AA financial strength rating, AIA offers strong reassurance that claims will be paid. The $829.6 million paid in claims during 2024, with a 92-93% approval rate, backs this up with real numbers.

The AIA Vitality programme is a genuine differentiator in the NZ market - no other life insurer offers a comparable wellness rewards system. For health-conscious policyholders, the combination of premium discounts and Active Rewards can partially offset AIA's higher pricing.

However, AIA's premium positioning means it may not suit budget-conscious consumers. Trauma cover premiums running 20-45% above market averages is significant, and the lack of general insurance products means customers need separate providers for car, home and contents cover. For those who prioritise value above all else, alternatives like Partners Life or Fidelity Life are worth comparing.
