Company Overview

What is ANZ Insurance and who’s behind it?

ANZ Bank New Zealand is the country’s largest bank, holding approximately 30% market share. ANZ’s NZ banking history dates back to 1840 through the Union Bank of Australia’s agreement with the New Zealand Company. Key milestones include acquiring PostBank in 1989, purchasing the National Bank of New Zealand from Lloyds Bank in 2003, and unifying both brands under ANZ in 2012.

ANZ does not underwrite insurance directly. Instead, it distributes insurance products through partnerships with specialist underwriters. General insurance (car, home, contents, boat) is underwritten by Vero Insurance New Zealand Limited (part of Suncorp Group), branded as "ANZ Asset Protector Insurance." Life & income insurance is underwritten by Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited (formerly Cigna NZ), with a financial strength rating of A (Excellent) from A.M. Best.

Headquartered in Auckland, ANZ employs approximately 9,000 people in New Zealand and funds over 30% of NZ home loans. Travel insurance is available as a complimentary benefit for ANZ Premium cardholders, underwritten by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd and managed by Allianz Partners.

ANZ covers 10 of the 13 major insurance categories in New Zealand:

ANZ Insurance products can be quoted and purchased online for car, contents, and house insurance at anz.co.nz, or arranged through ANZ branches and phone support. General insurance claims are managed via the MyVero online portal or by calling 0800 269 252.

Note on rating discrepancy: ANZ shows a significant gap between its Google rating (~4.7/5 via Glimp) and its Trustpilot (1.8/5) score. Trustpilot reviews are primarily banking-related and may not fully reflect ANZ’s insurance-specific experience. Consumer NZ rates ANZ below average for car insurance. Canstar reviews ANZ for home, contents, and car insurance but has not awarded ANZ any recent insurance-specific awards. ANZ won four Canstar awards in 2024 in banking categories only. What Customers Are Saying

Common themes from 500+ reviews across Google, Trustpilot, and other platforms

Having insurance alongside my banking makes life easy. I can see my policy details right in the ANZ app. Setting up contents insurance took about five minutes online.

Google Review, 2025 β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Vero handled our home insurance claim after storm damage. The MyVero portal made it easy to track progress. Sorted within three weeks.

Google Review, 2025 β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Disappointed that multi-policy discounts have been removed. My premium went up quite a bit at renewal with no real explanation. Considering switching.

Trustpilot, 2025 β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†

Good to know Chubb Life is behind the life insurance. The A.M. Best rating gives me confidence my family would be looked after. Straightforward application.

Google Review, 2025 β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†

Terrible experience with my car claim. Weeks of waiting, constantly passed between ANZ and Vero. Nobody seemed to own the process.

Trustpilot, 2024 β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†

ANZ is really just a middleman for Vero and Chubb. When I needed to claim, they sent me straight to Vero. Convenient for setup but frustrating for claims.
