Company Overview

What is NZI and who's behind it?

NZI is one of New Zealand's oldest insurance brands, founded in 1859 in Auckland as the New Zealand Insurance Company. Today it operates as a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited, which is a subsidiary of Insurance Australia Group (IAG). NZI sits alongside AMI, State, and Lantern within the IAG NZ family.

NZI has a storied history spanning over 165 years. The company was one of the underwriters of the Titanic, responded to victims of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and operated through both World Wars. In 1981 it merged with South British Insurance, was renamed NZI Corporation in 1984, and was acquired by General Accident in 1989 before IAG took ownership in 2003.

NZI holds an AA (Very Strong) Insurer Financial Strength Rating from Standard & Poor's and has been named IBANZ Insurer of the Year five times (2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013). NZI distributes exclusively through broker partners and is compliant with the Fair Insurance Code.

NZI offers personal and business insurance through its broker network:

NZI sells all policies exclusively through broker partners such as Aon, Crombie Lockwood, Marsh, and others. You cannot purchase NZI insurance directly - a broker will assess your needs and arrange the policy on your behalf.

What Customers Are Saying

Common themes from broker and customer feedback on NZI

NZI's Distinction tier is genuinely premium - contents cover up to $1M, jewellery up to $100K, and 12 months alternative accommodation. For high-value homes it is hard to match.

Broker feedback, 2025 ★★★★★

The three-tier system works well for clients. We can place budget-conscious customers on Essence and premium clients on Distinction - all with the same trusted underwriter.

Insurance broker, 2025 ★★★★★

NZI's commercial insurance is where they really shine. The risk solutions team, electrical inspections, and fire protection discounts add genuine value beyond just the policy.

Business broker, 2024 ★★★★★

Pricing is mid-to-premium. The Essence tier is 16-24% cheaper than Echelon which helps, but direct insurers can still undercut on simple personal lines.

Insurance broker, 2024 ★★★☆☆

Wanted to compare NZI prices online but there is no way to get a quote without finding a broker first. The process feels outdated compared to direct insurers.

Consumer feedback, 2024 ★★☆☆☆

165 years in business speaks for itself. NZI has the financial backing of IAG and an AA rating from S&P - you know claims will be paid when it matters.

What Affects Your NZI Insurance Premium?

🏷️

Cover Tier

Distinction is the most comprehensive and expensive. Echelon is mid-range. Essence is 16-24% cheaper than Echelon for a more basic level of cover.

📍

Location

Auckland typically costs more than regional areas due to higher theft and accident rates. Your broker will factor in your specific address.

🚗

Vehicle Value & Type

Higher-value vehicles cost more to insure. The Distinction tier is designed for premium vehicles, while Essence suits everyday cars.

📋

Claims History

No claims in the past 3-5 years significantly reduces your premium. Recent at-fault claims increase it.

💵

Excess Amount

Choosing a higher voluntary excess can reduce your premium. Your broker can help you find the right balance between excess and premium.

🌿

Vehicle Discounts

Low Kilometre discount (10% for under 5,000km per year) and Eco-Vehicle discount (10% for 5.5L/100km or better). Combined savings of up to 15%.

Our Verdict

Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of NZI

7.0
out of 10
Good

NZI's greatest strength is its heritage, financial backing, and comprehensive business insurance.

With over 165 years of history, an AA financial strength rating from S&P, and five IBANZ Insurer of the Year awards, NZI is a well-established name in New Zealand insurance. As a division of IAG New Zealand, NZI benefits from the financial backing and scale of Australasia's largest general insurance group.

NZI's three-tier personal insurance system (Distinction, Echelon, Essence) offers genuine flexibility, and the Distinction tier's premium features - contents up to $1M, jewellery up to $100K, art collection cover - are among the most generous in the NZ market. The business insurance range is also extensive, covering commercial property, liability, construction, fleet, cyber, and marine.

However, NZI's broker-only distribution model is a significant limitation for everyday consumers. With no direct online quotes, no self-service portal, and pricing that is not publicly listed, it can be difficult to compare NZI against direct insurers. For personal insurance, IAG's direct brands AMI and State may be more accessible alternatives with similar IAG backing.

How We Calculate Scores

Our editorial scores (out of 10) are calculated using a weighted methodology that considers:

  • Industry reputation (40%): IBANZ awards, broker sentiment, and financial strength ratings. Weighted towards verifiable industry data given limited consumer review availability.
  • Product features (25%): range of cover options, tier flexibility, excess choices, and policy terms compared to market average.
  • Pricing competitiveness (20%): based on tier structure analysis, broker-reported positioning, and Essence vs Echelon savings data.
  • Accessibility (15%): availability of online quotes, self-service options, and ease of comparing with other providers.

Disclaimer: Nothing on this page constitutes financial advice. Scores are editorial opinion based on publicly available data. NZI's broker-only model means direct consumer review data is limited - our assessment relies more heavily on industry sources.
